BLIND AMBITION. This documentary is the incredible true story of 4 refugees from Zimbabwe who flee to Cape Town, get jobs in the wine industry, become some of South Africa’s top sommeliers, and form Zimbabwe’s first national wine tasting team to compete in France’s World Blind Wine Tasting Championships. I watched this film in Cape Town (where most of it takes place) which made it particularly special, but it’s a fantastic film and you can stream it on Amazon Prime Video. Watch the Trailer Here.

THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA. This week I spent time in the Mississippi Delta. My first stop was Clarksdale to immerse in the origins of Delta Blues music. Definitely visit the Delta Blues Museum, walk around the small downtown to see all the wonderful street art and tributes to Blues music legends, and then hit the Ground Zero Delta Blues club in the evening, Another stop was Ruleville, the home of Fannie Lou Hamer, and then Jackson to see the home of Medger Evers and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. The Mississippi Delta was a pivotal site in the Black freedom struggle, and driving through it was a very powerful way to experience it and pay homage.

MERINO WOOL THERMAL SOCKS. I always travel with a pair of Icebreaker merino wool thermal socks that I wear in very cold climates, such as when I go skiing or when I hiked Mount Kilimanjaro. They are also handy if you’re just spending time outdoors in a really cold place so your feet stay warm all day. And, merino wool means they are anti-microbial and do not retain odor so you can hike in the same pair of socks day after day. See the Merino Wool Thermal Socks and all my travel gear here.

Last week I interviewed Ric Gazarian about his family’s history escaping the Armenian Genocide in 1915, making their way to Boston, and how his Armenian identity has evolved after visiting Armenia nearly every year for the past 2 decades. Ric then tells stories about racing through the Caucuses and driving across India and Cambodia in a Tuk-Tuk. He reflects on the unique experiences and local encounters that this mode of travel enables. Listen to the episode on your favorite platform here.
