1) EVENTS TO ATTEND

CARIBE COSTA RICA with WANDER WOMXN. I interviewed Janna Zinzi on Episode 270, and she is now leading a small group trip to immerse in both Afro-Costa Rican culture and the Bribri Indigenous communities on the Caribbean coast. After living there for 6 months, Janna is an amazing guide for this special region. The trip is open to women, femmes, nonbinary and gender expansive people. People of color are prioritized and centered but all races and ethnicities are welcome. See the full itinerary and reserve your spot here.

2) TRAVEL GEAR I RECOMMEND

RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES. I have been using one set of 4 Energizer rechargeable AA batteries for years. It’s environmentally sound, but also saves me tons of money buying new batteries all the time. It can charge both AA and AAA batteries and includes an auto-safe feature and over-charge protection. You can check out the Energizer Rechargeable Batteries, along with the rest of my travel gear here.

3) DESTINATIONS

DAR es SALAAM, TANZANIA is a bustling metropolis right on the ocean. Dar is the lively, cultural heart of Tanzania, and a fascinating melting pot. It’s a short boat ride to the island of Zanzibar and an easy domestic flight to go on safari in the Serengeti, hike Mt. Kilimanjaro, or kick it in Arusha. Dar is also where I attended one of the most epic hip hop nights I’ve been to anywhere in the world at Maison nightclub. The foyer had a giant mural of Biggie, with the crown lit up, and scrawled across the length of the wall it read: “It was all a Dream”.

Did you Listen to Last Week’s Episode of The Maverick Show?

Last week I dropped Part 2 of my interview with Yulia Denisyuk who talks about her first trip going to Palestine. She then reflects on the power dynamics of travel writing and talks about the importance of unpacking Orientalism & de-exotifying the Middle East and the global south. Yulia also shares tips on how to become a travel journalist, take better photographs, and turn your experiences into great travel writing. Finally, Yulia reflects on the power of travel for communal action instead of just personal growth. Listen to the episode on your favorite platform here.
