1) HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF

HURRICANE HELENE hit Asheville, North Carolina while I was in town visiting my parents (Photo is the building next to ours). All the neighbors in our building came together to share food, water, and ensure everyone was safe. The Salvadoran, Mexican, and Jamaican communities in particular brought smiles and joy, and reminded me of my greatest travel lesson: How people from all different cultures are so willing to help and be kind to others in times of need. After having no power, running water or cell service for the last 4 days, my parents and I were able to evacuate today but I think about those lives that were lost, those still missing, and those who lost their homes but don’t have the means to evacuate. 2) DOPE TRAVEL COMMUNITIES

NOMADNESS TRAVEL TRIBE is one of the dopest travel communities out there. I just spoke on the Keynote Panel at Nomadness Fest about Travel and Activism and was reminded again why this community means so much to me. It centers BIPOC travel experiences (allies are welcome too), highlights intersectional power dynamics in the travel space, and explores ways we can be more thoughtful and conscious as we move through the world. 3) TRAVEL GEAR I USE

WESTERN RISE BOUNDLESS SHORTS. I just picked up a pair of these incredibly versatile of durable travel boardshorts. They seamlessly transition from a day of adventure to a dip in the pool, all while ensuring you stay stylish and comfortable. These shorts are a three-in- one: I can hike in them during the day, swim in them in the afternoon, and throw on a collared shirt and be ready for dinner. If you want to travel with one pair of shorts, these are for you. See the Boundless Shorts and all Western Rise travel apparel for men and women here.

Did you Listen to Last Week’s Episode of The Maverick Show?

Last week I interviewed Dr. Javier Wallace who talked about his family history in Texas and Panama and his decision to move to Panama for 6 years. He opens up about his encounters with anti-Blackness in Panama, his realizations about the power of passport privilege, and his role in co-founding “Afro-Latinx Travel” which offers tours in Panama, Cuba, Costa Rica and Colombia that disrupt traditional tourism narratives, center marginalized stories, and benefit the local communities. Listen to the episode on your favorite platform here.
