2) WHAT TO WATCH

SOUNDTRACK TO A COUP D’ETAT is the new Oscar-nominated documentary film where jazz and decolonization intertwine in a story about the U.S. government’s plot to overthrow and assassinate Patrice Lumumba in the Congo. This historical rollercoaster of a film tells the story of how the U.S. sent jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to Congo to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup, and how musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach crashed the UN Security Council to protest the murder of Lumumba. Watch the Trailer.

3) EXPERIENCES

VISIT A ZOROASTRAIN FIRE TEMPLE and learn about one of the world’s oldest religions, dating back over 3,500 years, that has profoundly influenced Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Fire is a core element in Zoroastrianism, representing Ahura Mazda’s divine wisdom and purity, and in some temples the sacred flame has been kept alive for thousands of years. I visited the Ateshgah fire temple in Baku, Azerbaijan, that is now a UNESCO-listed site and museum showcasing ancient fire-worshiping traditions.

Did you Listen to Last Week’s Episode of The Maverick Show?

Last week I dropped part 2 of my interview with Youshita Fathi who talks about moving to Dubai to work as cabin crew for Emirates Airlines and then taking jobs for 1-3 years at a time in different countries like Portugal, Switzerland, Malta and Spain. She then describes her trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan, why it was life-changing, and why it inspired her to travel to every country in the world. She also shares her stereotype-busting trip through Balochistan while crossing the land border from Pakistan to Iran. Listen here on your favorite platform.
