1) EVENTS TO ATTEND

THE CHRISTMAS MARKET IN RIGA, LATVIA is a uniquely enchanting experience. Last week, I wandered through what felt like a time capsule where many of the vendors dress in traditional medieval costumes, such as woolen cloaks, tunics, leather boots, and headdresses that resemble what people wore centuries ago. The market booths have rustic decor like wooden barrels, iron lanterns, thatched roofs, and are often cooking with open fire in large bubbling cauldrons. The setting in Riga’s Dome Square feels as though you’ve stepped into a living history book with the snowy cobblestones and twinkling lights adding to this incredible holiday ambiance.

2) EXPERIENCES

DINE AT ROZENGRALS IN RIGA, LATVIA. Housed in a 13th-century cellar, originally built as a medieval wine vault, the underground chambers, with their arched stone ceilings and candlelit ambiance, make you feel like you’ve stepped into another era. Servers dress in authentic medieval attire, and the wooden benches, goblets, and exceptional attention to historical detail allow you to dine as medieval nobles or merchants might have.

3) TRIPS TO JOIN

AFRO CUBA TRIP WITH AFROLATINX TRAVEL. I interviewed Javier Wallace on episodes 303 about co-founding AfroLatinx Travel. In 2025 you can join one of two AfroCuba trips by one of the only organizations that is dedicated to facilitating immersion in AfroCuban history, spirituality, legacy, and contemporary life. These upcoming trips center the lived and material historical and contemporary realities of Africans and their descendants in Cuba. See details, itinerary, pricing, and book your spot here.

Did you Listen to Last Week’s Episode of The Maverick Show?

Last week I dropped Part 2 of my interview with Sojourner White where she talks about long distance train rides in the U.S., taking the Jose Cuervo Express Tequila Train in Mexico, and why it’s so unique to take the train through Peru. She then shares her experience hiking Rainbow Mountain, going on Safari in Kenya, and hiking a volcano in Guatemala for pizza. Sojourner then reflects on connecting with the African Continent as a Black American and the importance of paying attention to social, economic and political dynamics as we travel. Listen here on your favorite platform.
