      Episode Summary

In Part 2 of my interview with Harry Mitsidis, we start off talking about travel ethics, including how to avoid voyeurism and objectification of local communities, particularly low-income and vulnerable groups.  Harry shares tips on how to travel in ways that are more socially responsible and environmentally sustainable, and how to design culturally immersive experiences.  He then talks about his platform, NomadMania, and explains how it has divided the world into 1301 culturally distinct regions to visit.  Harry describes the free tools and resources available on the NomadManaia site for travelers to plan, track, measure, and visualize their travels.  He also explains the gamification, awards, verifications, and how travelers can improve their ranking for both the slowness of their travel and the recency of their travel.  Harry then talks about NomadMania’s “Series” lists of travel ideas by category, including the DARE (Distinctive Alternative Remote Extremes) list, as well as their in-person events and trips.  Finally, he reflects on how travel has impacted him, how his conception of travel has changed over time, and why he continues to travel today.  FULL SHOW NOTES INCLUDING DIRECT LINKS TO EVERYTHING DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE ARE AVAILABLE HERE

      Harry Mitsidis

Harry Mitsidis is one of only 3 people on the planet to have traveled to every country in the world twice.  He is also the founder of NomadMania which is, first of all, a non-profit dedicated to educating people about the world and helping those with limited means to travel more. Secondly, it is a free platform that offers tools, information, and resources that empower you to plan, execute, track and document your travels (and even get verified and ranked if you want to).  And third, it is also a global community that connects independent travelers, and encourages them to discover the diversity of the world and create a positive impact through meaningful, sustainable travel that benefits both the traveler and the destination. NomadMania values diversity, inclusivity, integrity and is committed to using travel as a force for good—to broaden horizons, create connections, and promote understanding.  Born in London and raised mostly in Greece, Harry studied sociology, did a Masters at Oxford, and an MBA in Rotterdam. Once he generated enough passive monthly income from his real estate investments to cover his lifestyle expenses, he dedicated his life to his primary passion of traveling the world and building NomadMania, and he is now conversational in 10 languages.
